Money Mission & Meaning:Passion At Work, Purpose At Play

Celebrity Fit Club Taps The Power Of Mission for African American Weight Loss

Let’s start off today with two great quotes -

“Heaven is Hell with friends” - anonymous
“The more public your commitments, the more committed you are.” - anonymous

One of the more powerful ways to increase the meaning in your life is to 1) make goals and commitments consistent with your mission, and 2) share those commitments with a community of people you respect.

When you share your commitments with a community, the community both helps you remember your commitments and celebrate your journey and accomplishment. The ‘Celebrity Fit Club‘ physician is tapping into this power with his “50 Million Pound Challenge. With stars including
Daniel Baldwin (Actor and brother of Alec & Stephen Baldwin), Ralphie May
(Hilarious comedian), and Mia Tyler (model, actress and daughter of Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, involved with Celebrity Fit Club, this might just get somewhere.

‘Dr. Ian Smith — known to fans as the medical expert on VH1’s “Celebrity Fit Club” and host of “Meet the Faith” on BET — is bringing his weight loss know-how to the city and asking African Americans to rise to the challenge. It’s a hefty one. Smith is on a mission to get African Americans to lose a collective 50 million pounds.’

When we think that we are sharing our experience of something with others, we feel our emotions more intensely than if we think we are alone. Community multiplies our emotions. For example, in a fascinating experiment at UC Santa Barbara in the early 1990’s, they found that people watching a comedy movie alone in a room, laughed twice as much when they thought their friend was watching the same movie in another room than when they thought their friend was watching a different movie in the other room.

When we have goals around our mission, if we share them and our progress towards them with people we respect, we tap into this power of community and feel more intensely about their accomplishment.

Take a cue from the celebrities in this case. Even if you don’t want to lose weight, share your commitments with people you respect and tap into the power of community in creating a life of Money, Mission, and Meaning.
