Label Your Garbage Can with the Words “Landfill” — There is no “Away”

“Effortless” — Ever notice how easy some things are?

Well, this blog is all about making your life easy. In 2008, we’re going to take a journey together on what it’s like to be “Living Green.” The first place to start is to take a moment, right now, to look at all the places in your life where you’re already Living Green. Maybe you use a Nalgene bottle, have a travel coffee mug or use the recycling containers around you. Keep thinking. Now, as you let these thoughts fill your head notice how good they make you feel. We can always make our lives better by focusing on what we are already doing to be “Living Green.” Energy goes where attention flows!

In the months ahead you’ll be reading about the values, attitudes and beliefs associated with “Living Green” You’ll also see how spending a little extra time doing simple things like labeling your garbage area with the word “landfill” will change your views radically. This week when you talk about taking out the garbage or throwing something away, call it what it really is - a “landfill”. Try, honey, this goes in the “landfill” or better yet, let’s put these items in the recycling containers. Remember, there is no away. Everything is connected to everything else. We are a fully functioning system. Just like our body, our planet needs regular upkeep and regular “tune-ups” — I’m here to help you make it easy by simply changing the words you use, the systems you create and demonstrating how truly effortless it can be to be “Living Green.”

If you’d like to learn more about what it means to be Living Green, you can also listen to this week’s podcast at www.livinggreenshow.com. Until your next read here are the action steps:

1. Label your garbage can with the word “Landfill”. If you keep garbage under the sink, put a label on the door that says “landfill.”
2. Change your vocabulary. Instead of “throwing it away” you are throwing things into the landfills. Call what you do what it really is.
3. Notice all the places in your life where you are already “Living Green” — Focus on those. We can only get to “better” by acknowledging what is already working!
