Pete Blackshaw is one of the most influential thinkers and most articulate speakers in the digital marketing world. His new book, “Satisfied Customers Tell Three Friends, Angry Customers Tell 3000: Running a Business in Today’s Consumer-Driven World” which we just call “Tell 3000,” asks readers to commit to three truths:

  1. Business are no longer in control of messaging.
  2. The more companies ignore the fact that they no longer control messaging, the more they will alienate their customers.
  3. Companies must achieve credibility on every front to succeed in today’s always-on, consumer-opinionated world.

There are some cool “brand association maps” where you can visualize the keywords associated with a brand. Pete points us to some helpful and inexpensive tools to track our brand reputation.

And my favorite part is the “Credibility Quadrant” diagram that shows where all the various marketing activities and touchpoints fall on the axis between consumer acceptance and brand control. Obviously email spamming, stealth marketing and shilling fall low and brand websites, feedback systems and “contact us” opportunities rank highest.

A great exercise to do with your brand is to list all of your consumer marketing activies and then plot them on this Credibility Quadrant. It’s a great assessment of your energy against your potential authenticity with your customers and prospects. Here’s a good review of Tell 3000 from Chat Threads.

Oh, and did I mention that Pete is featured in Time magazine? Here’s a photo I took of my issue.

Not only do I get Pete to tell us a ton of valuable insight into marketing credibility, but it wouldn’t be DishyMix without me asking Pete when he’s going to run for President (he could do it, he’s amazing) and what the future holds for him.

I believe Pete is one of those national treasures. I keep my eye on his evolution as he’s a super-star and I’m always interested in his analysis of the industry. You will enjoy this episode. I hope you’ll listen and you’ll send it to a few colleagues.

Pete has 4 autographed copies of Tell 3000 for DishyMix Listeners. Just post your desire for one on the DishyMix Facebook Fan Club and I’ll choose my favorite requests.

There’s also a Tell 3000 Fan Club you might want to join.

Enjoy!
