Teaching Children Jewish Traditions - The Living Legacy

The greatest challenge facing the Jewish educational world is the inculcation of a desire to live Jewishly– to actively participate in Judaism and its practices, and to experience the beauty and joy of Shabbat, holidays and the festivals.  This challenge looms even larger in view of the fact that most young people today experience Jewish living and Jewish practice at a level that is marginal. Oftentimes, Jewish children and adults are exposed to passive educational settings where they learn about Shabbat and the holidays and festivals; they are rarely engaged in hands-on learning activities that provide opportunities for gaining a personal and meaningful appreciation for Jewish tradition.

THE LIVING LEGACY addresses this concern. Through a variety of stimulating, hands-on workshops, it provides a unique and creative educational tool that links Jewish teaching and learning to Jewish practice and living. From wheat-grinding, challah braiding and candle making (for Shabbat), to creating a shofar (for Rosh Hashana) and pressing/refining oil (for use in the Chanukah menorah) — THE LIVING LEGACY provides an effective hands-on Jewish educational experience that leads to internalization and promotes actual practice.
