Jack Myers, Media Village - Coming to DishyMix Podcast
Coming this week on my DishyMix podcast, I interview Jack Myers, a figure of considerable authority in the media industry , founder of MediaVillage, Editor of the Jack Myers Media Business Report, and author of the new book “Virtual Worlds: Rewiring Your Emotional Future.”
You won’t want to miss this show. Jack is smart as hell, of course, as are all (well, maybe most…) of my guests. What’s cool about this interview is his insight into the changing consumer landscape in a world of always on, broadband, virtual access. Plus it’s great to hear the lifetime accomplishments of someone who has an important carreer and has done some really great philanthropic work.
Jack is both a tough-customer and a big huggy bear. He only takes “exclusives” for his newsletters. He only takes keynotes as speak ops. The man has limits, he’s strict and he lives by them. At the same time, when I launched Personal Life Media, he was on it with press coverage. Thank you, Jack.
If you listen to the podcast, you’ll get to know that Jack is intelligent, open and available in all aspects of his life and has had significant success in the media world. Even though he wanted to be a rock and roll DJ or an actor (he has the looks and the perfect hair to be an anchorman!) he got in to the production side of the TV business and produced six primetime specials. Successful in TV, he won a Peabody and was nominated for an Oscar and EMMY for best documentary for “Hank Aaron: Chasing the Dream.”
Jack has always loved media — especially TV — and believes it is the foundation of capitalism and democracy. Jack says “the first thing we should have done in Iraq is give everybody a free HD-TV and satellite receiver, built local news, radio stations, and newspapers.” Maybe it’s not too late?
Jack, divorced (what a catch!) father of three grown children, has always been committed to children’s education. In 1995 he attended a White House Conference on Children’s Educational TV as representative of advertising industry. And in the early days of TV was only vocal industry advocate for program content ratings system — now they are universally accepted. His continued involvement in education finds him on the Advisory Board of SU Newhouse School and also Dean’s Council at NYU Steinhardt School.
Does it make you think about what YOU can do to help the world in the course of YOUR work?
Jack grew up in upstate NY — Home of Utica Club beer — where sign on a restaurant actually reads: “Eat Here, Get Gas.” He blends his down home roots with his urbane sophistication and the blend is intoxicating. And like any good New Yorker he’s a season ticket holder to the Yankees. Single girls, this is your “in.”
If you’ve read Jack’s book, I’d like to hear your comments. If you’re involved in marketing your brand in a virtual world, tell us about it.
