Jack Myers, Media Village – Coming to DishyMix Podcast

Jack Myers, Media Village

Coming this week on my DishyMix podcast, I interview Jack Myers, a figure of considerable authority in the media industry , founder of MediaVillage, Editor of the Jack Myers Media Business Report, and author of the new book “Virtual Worlds: Rewiring Your Emotional Future.”

You won’t want to miss this show.  Jack is smart as hell, of course, as are all (well, maybe most…) of my guests. What’s cool about this interview is his insight into the changing consumer landscape in a world of always on, broadband, virtual access. Plus it’s great to hear the lifetime accomplishments of someone who has an important carreer and has done some really great philanthropic work.

Jack is both a tough-customer and a big huggy bear. He only takes “exclusives” for his newsletters. He only takes keynotes as speak ops. The man has limits, he’s strict and he lives by them.  At the same time, when I launched Personal Life Media, he was on it with press coverage. Thank you, Jack.

If you listen to the podcast, you’ll get to know that Jack is intelligent, open and available in all aspects of his life and has had significant success in the media world. Even though he wanted to be a rock and roll DJ or an actor (he has the looks and the perfect hair to be an anchorman!) he got in to the production side of the TV business and produced six primetime specials. Successful in TV, he won a Peabody and was nominated for an Oscar and EMMY for best documentary for “Hank Aaron: Chasing the Dream.”

Jack has always loved media — especially TV — and believes it is the foundation of capitalism and democracy. Jack says “the first thing we should have done in Iraq is give everybody a free HD-TV and satellite receiver, built local news, radio stations, and newspapers.”  Maybe it’s not too late?

Jack, divorced (what a catch!) father of three grown children, has always been committed to children’s education. In 1995 he attended a White House Conference on Children’s Educational TV as representative of advertising industry. And in the early days of TV was only vocal industry advocate for program content ratings system — now they are universally accepted. His continued involvement in education finds him on the Advisory Board of SU Newhouse School and also Dean’s Council at NYU Steinhardt School.

Does it make you think about what YOU can do to help the world in the course of YOUR work?

Jack grew up in upstate NY — Home of Utica Club beer — where sign on a restaurant actually reads: “Eat Here, Get Gas.” He blends his down home roots with his urbane sophistication and the blend is intoxicating.  And like any good New Yorker he’s a season ticket holder to the Yankees. Single girls, this is your “in.”

If you’ve read Jack’s book, I’d like to hear your comments. If you’re involved in marketing your brand in a virtual world, tell us about it.

Living Green: Podcast on Ecology and the Environment – Ideas Beyond the Inconvenient Truth of Global Warming

Living Green

Today Living Green, one of Personal Life Media’s top shows and an iTunes Top 100 podcast (out of 85,000 podcasts!) has a press announcement where the podcast is very cleverly packaged.

Because the show is about “effortless ecology for everyday people,” Meredith asked every show guest to come up with one Eco-Request for American citizens.

The hope is that bloggers and journalists will take this list of “challenges” put forth by people “walking the walk” and will create more dialog about what everyone and anyone can do to make a difference for the planet.

This podcast press strategy helps highlight the solid line up of guests on Living Green; raises the bar on what a podcasting press release should look like; gives the media something to “chew on” and furthers great ideas for all of us to consider in the fight against the climate crisis.

Here’s the full release. Let me know your comments about the Eco-Requests, the strategy or the show.

Personal Life Media Engages Sustainable Living Leaders To Communicate Their Eco-Requests Through ‘Living Green’ Podcasts

Green Pathfinders Appeal to American Citizens to Take Specific Actions

LOS ALTOS, CA – June 25, 2007 – Personal Life Media™, Inc. a publisher of lifestyle content in the form of 15 weekly audio programs, podcasts and blogs for people on the leading edge of culture, showcases a special series on “Living Green: Effortless Ecology for Everyday People” an advertising and sponsorship-supported free podcast. Hosted by Meredith Medland, founder of 3outcomes.com and environmental blogger, Meredith confabs with professionals in the ecology and sustainable-living arena who have special requests for Americans who want to move to a more green way of life.

“Americans have varying levels of interest in the green movement and through my interviews and relationships with some of today’s foremost experts on how to live a sustainable lifestyle, we believe if we ‘challenge’ American citizens by providing simple ways they can incorporate living green into their busy lives, we would see a shift in thinking that no matter how small or seemingly insignificant a change is, it will make a difference,” said Meredith Medland, Founder of 3outcomes.

Each week, Meredith’s guests provide one “small change” that American consumers can use to begin creating a healthier planet. These simple requests from experts include:

• Dan Ruben, Executive Director, Boston Green Tourism “Calculate your carbon footprint and make plans to reduce it by at least 10% per year for the next three years. If your lifestyle is like the average American, this won’t be difficult.”

• Michael Gosney, co-founder, Green Century Institute – “Help your town or city implement systemic changes toward ecological balance starting with your neighbors or those in your community.” http://personallifemedia.com/podcasts/living-green/episode004-michael-gosney-digital-be-in.html

• Tierra Del Forte, Founder, Del Forte Denim “Always carry a non-disposable tote around so you have an alternative to use plastic bags for those last minute purchases.”

• Rowan Gabrielle, President, URTH.tv – “Re-think the way you dress. Buy or make at least one organic outfit that you either love the color, style or fabric and live in it to see how it makes you feel. Rather than wearing something for “fashion”, wear something that is for “life.” Know that in making a change in your clothing, you are making yourselves a walking embodiment of change.” http://personallifemedia.com/podcasts/living-green/episode001-rowan-gabrielle.html

• Richard Louv, author of the best selling book ‘Last Child in the Woods – Saving our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder’ – “Spend two hours a week outside in nature. This will give you a better perspective on the wholeness and beauty of our earth and what we could potentially lose if we don’t value its existence.”
http://personallifemedia.com/podcasts/living-green/episode002-richard-louv.html

• Suzanne Sterling, World Music Diva, Kirtan Leader & Progressive
Ritualist of the Yoga Groove – “Seek out and use ONLY green cleaning products such Seventh Generation or the like.”

• Sarah Haynes, founder and CEO of The Spitfire Agency – “Carry your garbage for a week in a backpack with you everywhere you go.” http://personallifemedia.com/podcasts/living-green/episode008-sarah-haynes-zero-waste.html

• Paul Stamets, mycologist, founder of Fungi Perfecti® and author, who discusses his recent work in the movie 11th Hour with Leonardo DiCaprio and Daryl Hannah – “Learn to identify 10 species of mushrooms so that you are aware of the inherent powers and ways to improve the health of the planet and its people.” http://www.personallifemedia.com/podcasts/living-green/episode010-paul-stamets-fungal-intelligence.html

• Zem Joaquin, green editor for House and Garden & the ecofabulous site– “Use a travel coffee mug to eliminate the paper cup waste created each time you purchase a coffee or beverage.” http://www.personallifemedia.com/podcasts/living-green/episode009-zem-joaquin-cradle-to-cradle.html

Living Green guests believe their personal practices will bring about global change. While Meredith engages in a healthy and honest debate about how worthwhile a sustainable lifestyle really is, listeners learn what motivates these eco-savvy people. Through her unique interview style, her guests relate practical how-to advice on socially-responsible investing, green stocks, composting, recycled and organic products and foods, eco-tourism, green building, energy-efficient appliances and Energy-Star home products, alternative healthcare, clean, renewable and solar energy, carbon credits, Hybrid cars and more.

Searchnomics Session on People-Powered Search

I’m moderating a session next week at the Silicon Valley WebGuild’s big event, Searchnomics 2007.

My panel is covers a hot new category for web publishers – site search, specifically sit-side search that leverage the “wisdom of crowds.”

There are two kinds of site search – Content and Product. Some call it Retail and Media. We have a good group of companies who are breaking open this space. I’m on the advisory board of Collarity (how I got the speak op) and I’m pleased to see since they launched that this has become an actual “category.”

Here’s the session description. Let me know if you’ll be there.

Increased Revenue through People-Powered Site Search and Recommendations

A publisher’s main concern is connecting their audience to the content they need. The publisher’s best resource for accomplishing that goal is the audience themselves. But what is the best way to tap into the wisdom of that crowd? There is an emerging set of companies now focused at helping websites and Web publishers harness the collective intelligence of their website audience to generate better site search, helpful content recommendations, and important business intelligence about their most important customer segments. When Web visitors can find what they need more often, almost all website success metrics improve. Harnessing community behavior also allows publishers to match more relevant advertisements to users. Search marketing is then optimized as a major revenue driver using the knowledge of any site’s communities. Come hear how these companies are moving search and content discovery relevance beyond semantics and links, toward a new world of anonymous user-actions and behavior.

Jamis MacNiven, Pancake Man, Buck’s Woodside

Jamis

To hear Jamis interviewed on my podcast in iTunes click here.

“I revel in the fact that I am alive in the end of the 20th century and am here to witness the Third Revolution. Buck’s has somehow been picked as one of the places where people meet in The Valley to hammer out the Information Age.

I have the perfect job. I meet fascinating people from all over the world and I see them at their best. The restaurant is also my canvas and I have created a somewhat wacky environment of things that take my fancy. Some of the stuff I build, like the 11-foot model of the Airship Macon, or I might find something I can’t live without like the Russian space suit I picked up in Moscow recently. Sometimes people give me things such as the training module that NASA used to whip the monkeys into shape for their trip into space in the early 60’s. I just acquired a collection of 700 Cracker Jack prizes from 1905 to 1930. They represent the total consumption of that estimable product by Gladdis Eammes during those years.
